Retirement Income Planning in Redwood City
Building a nest egg and drawing a steady monthly income from it are two different problems. We help you see what money arrives each month, where it falls short, and which insurance-based options could cover the difference, all in plain language.
What retirement income planning actually covers
Most people reach retirement with several separate pieces: Social Security, maybe a pension, a 401(k) or IRA, some savings, and possibly a life insurance policy with cash value. Retirement income planning lines those pieces up and tests them against one question. Will they pay your bills every month, for the rest of your life?
We handle the insurance part of that answer. We look at where guaranteed income products, such as annuities, or the cash value in a whole life or universal life policy, can make sense for you. Sometimes they fit well. Sometimes they don't, and we'll tell you that directly.
We are not your tax preparer or attorney. When a question belongs with one of them, we say so and help you know what to ask.
What we look at with you
An income and expense picture
We list what you expect to receive each month and what you expect to spend. Seeing both on one page is often the most useful thing in the whole conversation.
The longevity question
Running out of money at 88 is a real worry, especially for healthy people with long-lived parents. We show how long your savings might last at different withdrawal levels and where a lifetime income stream could help.
Annuity options, explained simply
Annuities come in several types with very different rules on fees, surrender periods and payouts. We explain how each one works, what it costs to get out early, and whether any of them suits your situation.
Existing life insurance review
If you already own a whole life or universal life policy, we check its cash value and how it could be used in retirement, whether by loans, withdrawals or keeping it in place for your beneficiary.
Coverage for your spouse or partner
Some pensions shrink or stop when one spouse dies. We look at whether the surviving partner would still have enough income and what coverage could protect them.
Good times to review your retirement income
You plan to stop working within ten years
In the years leading up to retirement, decisions about pension elections, annuities and your Social Security claiming age can still be changed and have time to pay off.
You've saved but have no income plan
A solid 401(k) balance won't tell you how much you can safely spend per month. If you don't have that figure, it's worth working out.
A pension election is coming up
Choosing a single-life or joint-and-survivor payout can affect your spouse's income for decades, and it is difficult to reverse.
Market swings worry you
If one rough year in the market could push back your retirement date, some guaranteed income may be worth a conversation.
You're unsure what your old policy does
Lots of people hold a cash value policy from years back with no idea of its current value. We can go through it with you.
How we work together
- 1
A first conversation by phone
You tell us where you are, when you hope to retire, and what worries you most. There's no cost to talk and no pressure to buy anything.
- 2
Gathering the numbers
We ask for your Social Security estimate, pension statements, account balances and any existing policies. Rough figures are fine to start.
- 3
A plain-language review
We meet at your place of business or by phone, walk through your income picture, and show any gaps. If an annuity or policy could help, we explain how it works, what it costs and what the downsides are.
- 4
Your decision, on your timeline
You take whatever time you need to think it over. If you move forward, we handle the application and keep you updated until the contract is in place.
What affects the cost
Talking through your plan with us costs nothing. If you do buy a product, its price is set by the insurance company's contract terms, and buying nothing is always an option. We show you the fees, surrender charges and any rider costs before you sign.
- Type of product
- Fixed, indexed and variable annuities carry different fees and risks. Cash value life insurance has its own cost of insurance charges.
- Your age and health
- For life insurance, age and health shape premiums. For income annuities, your age when payments start affects the monthly amount.
- Riders and guarantees
- Add-ons such as lifetime income riders or long-term care features usually carry an extra charge. We explain each one so you can decide if it's worth it.
- Surrender period
- Many annuities charge a fee if you withdraw more than an allowed amount in the early years. Shorter surrender periods often mean different crediting rates.
Common questions about retirement income
Something not covered here? (650) 715-1375
Is an annuity required to retire?
Not at all. Plenty of people retire well without one. An annuity is just one way to turn savings into guaranteed income, and it fits best when guaranteed sources like Social Security and a pension don't cover your basic monthly expenses.
Could my life insurance help fund retirement?
Possibly, if you own a whole life or universal life policy with cash value. You might borrow against it or take withdrawals, though that can shrink your beneficiary's payout. Term life builds no cash value, so it doesn't work this way.
Can you tell me when to start Social Security?
We'll show how claiming at different ages affects your monthly income together with your other sources. The decision is yours, and for detailed benefit rules we may refer you to the Social Security Administration.
I've already retired. Is it too late?
No. We can still go over your income, see whether your current policies are doing their job, and explore options if your savings are shrinking faster than you planned.
Can you advise me on taxes or investments?
Our focus is insurance and annuity products. Tax questions and stock or bond portfolio management belong with a tax professional or financial advisor, and we're glad to work with them.
