Universal Life Insurance in Redwood City

Universal life is permanent coverage that lets you change what you pay, and often how much protection you hold, as your life shifts. We lay out how the policy works and what it takes to keep it funded. We also show how it compares with term life and whole life for your situation.

How universal life works and who it's built for

Universal life is a type of permanent life insurance. Every premium goes first toward the policy's monthly insurance charge and fees, and the remainder becomes cash value that earns interest from the insurer. As long as that cash value can keep covering the monthly charges, your coverage stays in force.

Most buyers choose it for the flexibility. You can pay more in strong years and less in tight ones, and many policies let you increase or reduce the death benefit down the road. It is often a good match for business owners whose income swings, people who need coverage past a term period, and those who want to leave money to a beneficiary or handle estate costs.

That flexibility comes with a responsibility to keep an eye on it. The policy's insurance charges rise with age, so a few years of underfunding can leave it falling short. We go over those figures with you in simple terms before you agree to anything.

What working with us includes

Start with the job the coverage must do

Before any product talk, we ask what the money is for: replacing income, clearing debts, funding a buy-sell agreement or leaving something to a beneficiary. The face amount follows from that answer, not from a sales goal.

Guaranteed vs. current-assumption designs

Some universal life policies are built to keep the death benefit locked in to a set age, with little cash value. Others aim to grow cash value but rely on the interest the insurer credits. We explain which one matches what you want.

Indexed options explained honestly

Indexed universal life links its interest to a market index, with a cap on gains and a floor against losses. We show you how caps can be lowered over time and why the illustrated return is not a promise.

Illustrations you can read

We go through the policy illustration line by line, including the guaranteed column, so you can see what happens if interest stays low or you skip payments.

Death benefit option choice

A level death benefit keeps charges lower and lets cash value build faster. An increasing option pays the face amount plus the cash value. We help you choose and explain how to switch later if plans change.

Signs universal life may be the right fit

  • Your income rises and falls

If you earn commission, seasonal pay or business profits, locking into one fixed premium can pinch. With universal life you can raise or lower payments within the policy's limits, provided it stays funded.

  • You need coverage that outlasts a term

If a 20 or 30 year term would end before your need does, such as estate taxes, a special-needs dependent or a long-held business, permanent coverage makes sense.

  • Whole life premiums feel too high

Universal life can deliver lifelong protection for less than whole life, especially a guaranteed design focused on the death benefit rather than cash growth.

  • You own a business with partners

Buy-sell funding and key person coverage often need to last for decades. A flexible permanent policy can match that timeline.

  • You have an older policy you don't understand

Many universal life policies bought years ago assumed higher interest rates. If yours has never been reviewed, it is worth checking before a low cash value turns into a lapse notice.

How it works, step by step

  1. 1

    A phone conversation

We ask about your family, your business, your budget and how long the coverage needs to last. Most calls settle whether universal life is even the right type.

  2. 2

    Comparing designs and carriers

We put side-by-side options in front of you, often with a term or whole life comparison, so you can weigh cost and tradeoffs in the same terms.

  3. 3

    Application and underwriting

Most carriers ask health questions, and many want a brief paramedical exam, which can usually happen at your workplace. The rating you receive drives the internal insurance charge, so we set expectations with you before you apply.

  4. 4

Delivery and a clear funding plan

Once the policy is approved, we review the final contract with you and set a premium level that keeps it on track, not just the minimum.

  5. 5

    Periodic check-ins

We look at your annual statement with you and request an in-force illustration when needed, so you can adjust before a small shortfall grows.

What drives the cost of universal life

Two people buying the same coverage amount can pay very different premiums. The number depends on your age and health, how big the benefit is and how the policy is structured. With those details in hand, we quote you by phone and explain each line.

Age and health class
Buying younger and healthier keeps the monthly insurance charge lower. Tobacco use and certain medical history put you in a more expensive class.
Benefit size and option
More death benefit means more cost. Picking the increasing benefit option also carries higher internal charges than a level benefit.
Length of the guarantee
Guaranteeing coverage to age 90 is cheaper than guaranteeing it to age 121. A policy designed mostly for cash growth takes more money to fund than one designed around the death benefit.
Your funding approach
Paying the minimum holds today's premium down but leaves a thinner cushion later. Putting more in early can reduce what the policy costs you overall.
Added riders
A waiver of premium, chronic illness access or a child rider each come with a charge. We recommend only the ones that match your circumstances.

What people ask us about universal life

Something not covered here? (650) 715-1375

Could my policy lapse after years of payments?

It can. When the cash value no longer covers the monthly charges, the policy may lapse. This shows up most in older policies that were paid at the minimum back when rates ran higher. Choosing a guaranteed design or reviewing the policy regularly heads off most of these problems.

What separates universal life from whole life?

With whole life, the premium is fixed and cash value grows on a guaranteed schedule. Universal life lets you adjust what you pay, and in some cases the death benefit, but how it performs depends more on how you fund it and the interest the insurer credits. Our Whole Life Insurance page explains the other half of that comparison.

Can I get money out of the cash value?

Most policies allow it, through a policy loan or a partial withdrawal. Loans carry interest, and whatever is still owed reduces the amount your beneficiary gets. Taking out too much can leave the policy unable to pay its monthly charges, so we work through the figures with you before you withdraw anything.

Does indexed universal life make a good investment?

Its first job is life insurance. A floor shields you from market losses, but a cap limits what you can earn, and fees are deducted each month. It has a place in some long-range plans, yet we would never present it as a stand-in for retirement savings.

Is term life the less expensive choice for me?

If your need goes away in 20 or 30 years, it often is. Term Life Insurance protects you for a fixed stretch at a lower premium, and we will say so directly when it suits you better.

Can you help if I live outside Redwood City?

Yes. Our clients come from all over the area, San Carlos, Belmont, Menlo Park and Foster City among them, and we mostly work by phone or at your place of business.
